Custom-Made or Universal? Choosing the Right Seat Cover

When looking for a seat cover, you will come across two main options: custom-made covers patterned to your car's make and model, and universal covers designed to fit different cars. Both have their place; what matters is weighing up your expectations, your budget and your car's seat design together.

The key difference: the pattern

A custom-made cover is cut and sewn to the dimensions and shape of a specific car's seat. Side bolsters, headrest sockets, armrests, seat adjustment levers and the split points of the rear seat are all taken into account in the pattern.

A universal cover, on the other hand, is cut more loosely to fit a wide range of cars and is usually held on the seat with elasticated edges, straps and Velcro. This flexibility means one cover can be used in many cars, but it may not fit any of them perfectly.

Comparison

Strengths of a custom-made cover

  • It fits the seat snugly; there is less slipping, wrinkling and bunching.
  • The airbag seam can be positioned in line with the seat's own airbag area.
  • The openings for the headrests, armrests, seat belt buckle and seat controls are in the right place.
  • Because the fabric sits without stretching or folding, it ages more evenly.

Strengths of a universal cover

  • It is usually more affordable and readily available.
  • It can be used in another car when you change vehicles.
  • It is practical for short-term protection (for example before selling the car or when carrying pets).

Why does it matter for airbags?

On seats with side airbags, the cover must not create resistance in front of the seam line through which the airbag will deploy. As cover manufacturers' own sources point out, the position of the seams on universal covers can vary from seat to seat and may not line up exactly with the airbag area. In a recall reported to NHTSA in the US, it was found that fitting covers with the airbag label on the wrong side could prevent the side airbag from deploying. This shows the importance of both the right pattern and correct fitting.

We make all our covers with side seams that open in the side airbag area; on a vehicle-specific pattern, the position of this seam is set according to the seat's own airbag line.

What to know before ordering

For a custom-made cover, the following information about your car is important:

  • Make, model and model year.
  • Trim level (seat shape can vary between trims of the same model).
  • Whether the front seats have side airbags.
  • How the rear seat splits (for example 60/40) and whether there is a centre armrest.
  • Whether there is seat heating, electric adjustment or control buttons on the side of the seat.

You can find your car by make and model using the vehicle selector. If there is a detail you are unsure about, sending a few photos of the seats is usually the quickest solution.

Fitting and use

Fitting a custom-made cover takes a little more care than a universal one, because the cover is designed to fit the seat exactly. When fitting, make sure the side panels lie flat, the airbag seam is on the door side and the straps are not overtightened. Once fitted, the cover behaves like part of the seat; you do not need to straighten it every time you get in.

If you are fitting it for the first time, take your time. First remove the headrests, pull the backrest cover on from top to bottom, then position the seat cushion cover and fasten the straps under the seat. Because the material is more flexible at room temperature, waiting for the car to warm up rather than fitting it on a very cold day makes the job easier. Finally, check the airbag area and seat belt buckle on each seat once more.

If you are going to use a universal cover

If you have chosen a universal cover, you can reduce the risks by paying attention to a few points:

  • Make sure the product is clearly stated to be "airbag-compatible" and check where the airbag seam is.
  • When fitting, make sure this seam is on the same side as the seat's own airbag label.
  • Do not let excess fabric gather in the airbag area; fasten the straps so they do not create tension in this area.
  • Check that the cover does not cover the seat belt buckle or the child seat anchorage points (ISOFIX).

Cost in the long run

When comparing prices, you should consider not just the initial outlay but also how long the cover will stay in good shape. A cover that does not fit the seat properly slips a little every time you get in; the fabric folds and rubs at the same points and wears faster. The constant load on the seams and elastic also causes them to loosen over time. With a cover that fits properly, there is far less of this movement. So for those planning to keep their car for years, the price difference between the two covers can look more reasonable when spread over the period of use.

Which one should you choose?

If you plan to keep your car for a long time, your seats have side airbags and you want the cover to look neat every day, custom-made makes more sense. If you need short-term protection or change cars often, a universal cover can do the job; even then, you need to be careful about airbag compatibility and correct fitting.
